Discovering Yourself Through PR
For many students, PR becomes a space for self-discovery, helping them understand who they are, what they value and how they want to communicate to the world.
When I entered the College of Communications, I knew I was drawn to storytelling, creativity and connection, but I hadn’t yet found the confidence to fully own my voice. Through my involvement in PRSSA, I began to realize that PR is all about learning how to express yourself with clarity and intention. Every assignment, pitch or presentation becomes an opportunity to reflect on perspective, tone and purpose.
Finding Your Voice Through PRSSA at CSUF
PRSSA at Cal State Fullerton offers more than professional development; it creates a supportive environment where students are encouraged to explore their creativity and build confidence in their voice. Through collaboration and hands-on experiences, students learn that self-expression often grows strongest in a community.
Isabella Gallardo, a member of the external communications committee at CSUF PRSSA, shared how working alongside her peers expanded her knowledge about what it means to create.
“Working with a team, I feel like my team members really helped give me another perspective on what it means to be creative,” she said.
Experiences like these show how collaboration doesn’t take away from individuality, it enhances it, allowing students to push each other to achieve something meaningful.
PRSSA also empowers students to step outside of what feels comfortable or “generic.” Monet, vice president of external communications of CSUF PRSSA, reflected on how involvement in the organization has helped her embrace confidence and authenticity in her work.
“I know that now I’m able to express myself, put myself out there in PRSSA,” she said. “I don’t want to be generic, like just a typical school club or organization. I want to make us really stand out and show professionalism, as well as the fun creative stuff.”
Her experience highlights how PRSSA encourages students to balance strategic thinking with personal expression.
Self-Expression Through Storytelling and Community
At its core, PR is storytelling — and storytelling is one of the most powerful forms of self-expression. Through PRSSA, students learn that their voices are valuable and their stories matter. Exposure to different perspectives allows students to experiment, grow and develop a communication style that feels authentic.
PR also emphasizes community. By listening, collaborating and learning from others, students begin to understand where their voices fit within larger conversations and how they can contribute meaningfully. For students hesitant to put themselves out there, PRSSA at CSUF offers reassurance: growth comes from showing up, speaking honestly and allowing creativity to evolve.
Public relations is not just about telling stories for brands — it’s about learning how to tell your own. And through communities like PRSSA, students gain the confidence to share those stories with purpose.
